As well as the two sisters, Basak Onay and Oyku Thurston, there are many different cultures to thank for the creation of BORNN. Away from their hometown of Istanbul, Basak and Oyku spent a considerable amount of time growing up in Tokyo, Barcelona and Los Angeles. This exposure to different cultures and craftsmanship inspired them to establish a company that brought together their years of local heritage. So, with their backgrounds in creative industries, BORNN was finally founded in 2015.
BORNN, formerly known as Art.i.choke, takes a contemporary and innovative approach to classic enamelware and since its establishment has been a trendsetter in the industry. With products that are manufactured using traditional handcrafted techniques, they aim to produce a range of modern and unique pieces that keep this captivating history alive. Even now, every BORNN product is manufactured in Istanbul by a team of master artisans.
Within the five collections including the Monochrome, Marble, Drip, Bloom and Mediterranean, each product is one of a kind and handmade individually. This means that the individual marks of each piece stand to tell its journey, and buyers can see each as a unique character that can be enjoyed over time.
Recently, the company has exhibited at Maison&Objet Paris and has featured in a number of publications including Architectural Digest and the South China Morning Post.
BORNN’s enamelware is traditionally crafted by process of fusing glass onto heavy-gauge steel after which the raw steel bodies are either machine mulled or hand-formed, glazed and then fired in a traditional kiln. Due to the high firing temperature of the kiln, each individual item will have a different colour intensity and a unique point of difference. This manufacturing process also allows all BORNN products to be used on hot surfaces.
Compared to their competitors, BORNN offers a total of 34 shapes and 258 unique enamelware products in five different tableware collections. All products are produced in Turkey, not China, and BORNN are the only enamelware company that uses heavy gauge steel, making them very durable, resistant to chips and therefore highly suitable for commercial use.
Each enamelware collection tells a story, and within that collection, each piece tells a journey. The Mediterranean collection, for example, brings BORNN back to its roots, looking to the sea as the main inspiration. The enamelware’s contrast between blue and white makes this the perfect collection for al fresco dining. Additionally, the Marble collection is sold in many prestigious retailers throughout the world, and its design has been replicated in many different homeware goods and textiles.
Those looking to pack their home with pizazz can certainly rely on BORNN. With collections for the kitchen and the bathroom, these pieces provide a contemporary twist to traditional enamelware, in colours that can suit even the most eclectic of tastes.
