BRAND STORY

The concept for Soma was created in San Francisco when founder Mike del Ponte was hesitant to put his cheap plastic "other brand" water filter on his nicely set table. Mike decided to pour his filtered water into a glass wine decanter. Unfortunately (or fortunately) as he did, the lid of the water pitcher fell off, causing water to gush all over the kitchen floor. As he cleared up the mess, he thought, "Why can't someone create a water filter that's beautifully designed, easy to use and made from sustainable materials?" Soma was born and the rest is water under the bridge. 

The company is based on 4 values; brilliant design, vibrant health, 360º sustainability and clean water for all. Soma believe that access to clean drinking water is a basic human right and as such are constantly trying to find solutions to the global water crisis. Their commitment to humanity lead them to become B Corp Certified; this means they are subject to rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. 

Since their start in September 2013 they have created an award-winning product line of water filters and on-the-go bottles that have been featured in numerous publications such as The New York Times and Vogue and have also been shown on shows such as Ellen Degeneres. 

Why Soma?

With design and functionality working in symmetry, Soma have created a range of products that not only create a superior filtered water but have also developed a product you would not be ashamed to show in pride of place on your dining table or work top. 

Soma is the only company that filter water with 100% plant-based filtration, The filter is made from certified sustainable activated coconut shell carbon and plant-based sugar cane; making this product not only great for your health but also friendly to the planet from start to finish. 

The filter was designed by water filter expert David Beeman who previously developed a series of water treatment devices that provided a tight water quality range to Starbucks, which enabled them to standardise their flavour profile. He then created a manual on the water quality chemistry for coffee which was published by the Speciality Coffee Association of America, and has subsequently turned into the standard for coffee cupping labs worldwide. With his knowledge of water filtration and Soma's belief in sustainability, it was a perfect match for developing the range. 

Soma try to give back not only to the planet but also to its inhabitants; they do this by making a donation from every purchase to a non-profit organisation, charity: water that endeavour to bring clean drinking water to those in need. They also offset their emissions with conservation-based forestry.

 

Soma is the go to brand for AthLeisure in the US and can be found in all the leading yoga and spin studios as well as the offices of those athletic folks at Nike. Sometimes a brand just makes you feel good; to feel, to look at, this is one of those. One to watch.
